Tip of the Week: "10 Commandments for Swimming Parents"

We are starting a new series that will span the next few weeks - 10 Commandments for Swimming Parents!

This week we are posting the first 3 Commandments:

I. Thou shalt not impose thy ambitions on thy child.

Remember that swimming is your child's activity. Improvements and progress occur at  different rates for each individual. Don't judge your child's progress based on the performance of other athletes and don't push him based on what you think he should be doing. The nice thing about swimming is every person can strive to do his personal best and benefit from the process of  competitive swimming.

II. Thou shalt be supportive no matter what.

There is only one question to ask your child after a practice or a competition - "Did you have fun?" If meets and practices are not fun, your child should not be forced to participate.

III. Thou shalt not coach thy child.

You are involved in one of the few youth sports programs that offers professional coaching. Do not undermine the professional coach by trying to coach your child on the side. Your job is to provide love and support. The coach is responsible for the technical part of the job. You should not offer advice on technique or race strategy. Never pay your child for a performance. This will only serve to confuse your child concerning the reasons to strive for excellence and weaken the swimmer/coach bond.

RSA Swim-A-Thon NEXT Weekend, April 19

Swim-a-thon time is here!  You may have noticed the Swim-a-thon packets that your swimmers have been bringing home this week.  If your swimmer has not yet received a packet, please have your swimmer contact their coach.

The RSA Swim-a-thon will be held on April 19th @ TAC.

07:00 - 09:00 am   Wahoos, Barracudas, & Sharks
09:00 - 11:00 am   Novas, Dolphins, & Sea Stars
11:00 - 1:00   pm   Senior Sprints, Nationals, & MS/HS Prep

For those of you new to RSA, Swim-a-thon is an annual fundraising event open to all RSA swimmers.  Through our Swim-a-thon, we raise money to support both RSA and USA Swimming.  This year, we will be donating 5% of our proceeds earned from Swim-a-thon to the Autism Society of North Carolina!

Each athlete will be allowed two hours to complete as many lengths of the pool as s/he can (200 length maximum).  Athletes are asked to solicit sponsors and donations for their efforts.  Athletes will be awarded different prizes for different levels of accomplishment.  Please see your packet for more details.

Our goal this year is 100% swimmer participation to either participate as a swimmer or sponsor, 100% Fun and good times by all swimmers and family participants, and $35,000 in total dollars raised by RSA.  We hope that all families chose to participate.   However, whether your athlete is able to swim or not, RSA needs ALL packets returned.

Please email Debra Ryan,
ryan54@aol.com, or Coach Tammy, tammy.minyard@swimrsa.org, for any questions related to the RSA Swim-a-thon.

We are offering prize baskets to the boy and girl that are the highest earners in their practice group. This worked out great last year, and the kids really loved the baskets full of goodies they won for working hard and raising money for the team.

We are asking each swimmer to donate a small gift to put in these baskets, $5-$10.  If you have a boy, donate a boy gift, and if you have a girl, donate a girl gift.  To make this as easy as possible, there will be a labeled box in the hospitality room at TAC.  This is located behind the glass doors by the elevator upon entering the building.  Please leave the item in the box, and we will be picking them up regularly.

In order to have baskets to put these prizes in, we are asking the parent liaison and spirit coordinator of each practice group to supply the basket/bucket or whatever nifty inexpensive bin they would like.  This way we will end up with 2 baskets per group.

We would like to get all the donations by May 7th!  This way we will have time to organize and assemble the baskets before they are awarded at the end of the year banquet.
